Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
