Senior Labour official Ed Miliband has urged the party to put aside internal conflicts after leader Sir Keir Starmer directly expressed regret to Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP over hostile briefings linked to the Prime Minister's office.
The political controversy started after reports emerged about hostile background comments from Starmer's team targeting Streeting. Although initial attempts to downplay the matter, the discussion between Starmer and Streeting apparently followed a more serious turn.
Starmer expressed regret to Streeting, reporters have been told. The exchange was short, and they did not address Morgan McSweeney, whom the PM is now under increasing scrutiny to sack.
In his morning media interviews, Miliband emphasized the need for the party to focus on national issues rather than party disputes.
Clearly, I think the media briefing has been unhelpful, without doubt.
But my call to the party now is clear, which is we need to focus on the nation, not each other.
