British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
