The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of pursuits much better than catching up on the latest news: unwrapping gifts, indulging in delicious food, and employing patience techniques to avoid arguing with relatives. It is wished you were able to do all these things and more. That said, the showbiz industry doesn't take a break, and this is particularly true for the realm of anime. Numerous noteworthy news items came out during the break, and should you overlooked a few, here is a compilation of the most exciting bits.
Perhaps the most surprising piece of news, the much-discussed troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man failed to deter further production. Season 3 will come back with a subsequent part in 2027—a date so remote they easily could have labeled it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will still be leading the project. On a positive note this time, director Shinpei Nagai is on board to direct from the outset, which might be a hopeful indicator. However, the promotional image for the new episodes is identical to the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This makes me think that, nowadays, they could be mocking the fans.
Kyoto Animation has built a name for being an top-tier animation studio, setting itself apart not just for the superb artistry of its work but for the ethical practices of its employees—a rarity in the industry. Unexpectedly, until now, it had not produced an anime adapted from a manga published in Shonen Jump, perhaps the most iconic magazine in the field. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became widespread acclaim when it first appeared in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it came back with a reduced workload, the series proved it hadn't lost the fans' affection and enthusiasm, and now everyone is thrilled about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the best-selling, epic Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English localization, but the anime has been going on for some time, and season 6 was yet another stellar entry. It turns out that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been announced as currently being made, and it will very likely debut in 2026.
Another studio renowned for the artistic merit of its projects, Science Saru has delivered hit shows of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, lastly, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an prominent woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and captivating visual style, which reminds me a bit of Ranking of Kings. Debuting in July 2026, this one will absolutely be on my must-watch list.
Shortly after the release of its twenty-fourth episode, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be securing a follow-up. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a specific release date has not been disclosed yet.
